A heat pump in Liberty County has not been running against a punishing weather environment. 38 severe weather events were recorded in Liberty County, Florida between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional event in a system's life, not a steady source of mechanical stress. When a contractor pulls a unit apart here, what they find points to refrigerant lines that were never charged right, coils that went too long without cleaning, or a compressor that simply ran past its useful life. The weather record gives them little to work with as an explanation.

Housing built for earlier generations of HVAC equipment tends to carry systems that have been swapped in over the years, layered onto structures designed around something else. Half the homes in Liberty County, Florida were built in 1991 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A heat pump running in a house from that era has often been retrofitted more than once, and when a repair technician opens the unit, the parts it takes are not always still in production. That gap between what the house was built for and what now runs in it is where a repair job can stall, waiting on a supplier rather than a diagnosis.

The Parts of a Heat Pump a Contractor Checks First

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, an air handler with ductwork in the attic space, and an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall.

The outdoor unit is the piece most homeowners recognize: a metal cabinet set on a pad outside the house that holds the compressor and the condenser coil. The compressor is the part that does the hardest mechanical work, and when a heat pump stops moving heat or starts making noise, it is often where a contractor looks first. The condenser coil wraps around the inside of that cabinet and is exposed to whatever the outdoor air carries.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower fan that pulls air across it. A refrigerant line set runs between the two units, and the reversing valve inside the system is what lets a heat pump move heat in either direction. Expansion valves, capacitors, and the thermostat wiring all sit at different points along that path and each one is a place a contractor checks when the system is not behaving as it should.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines which of them applies to your particular house and system.
